I can't seem to get any focus on the center unless I engage the subject from a foot away or less? Any ideas? Using it on an NEX 5

Sounds like the lens isn't reaching infinity correctly, does the lens screw all the way into the adapter? It should do on an nex adapter but it's worth checking. Also some of the lenses come with a free macro extension ring, you could see if one of those is screwed on to the rear of the lens and remove it.
Otherwise it could put together wrong in the factory.
